The Social Media Specialist is responsible for planning, executing and analyzing social media content in support of overall museum content, educational programs, audience engagement and development goals. This position produces social media content that empowers museum audiences to contribute to a national dialog on history and culture, race and identity.


Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Executes a social media strategy based on key initiatives and informational announcements.

Plans, executes and analyzes museum's Social Media content for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn.

Researches, writes, edits and publishes daily content.

Executes ongoing and one-time social media campaigns.

Monitors, listens and engages with audiences in real-time.

Produces multimedia content.

Moderates comments and fields inquiries from social media audiences.

Communicates and collaborates with teams across the museum to ensure timely uploads and content.

Produces written and graphic content for the museum's social media channels.

Demonstrates familiarity with campaign strategies and content plans.

Demonstrates ability to create reports and analytics.

Creates, resizes and redesigns graphics for various social media outlets and email marketing.

Creates content for other digital platforms as needed.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and co-workers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions as the best of own ability.


Bachelor's degree and a minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education / experience. Experience with writing content for social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and LinkedIn. Experience creating, resizing and redesigning graphics for various social media outlets and email marketing.



Museum experience preferred

Operational knowledge and skill in administrative / clerical practices and systems, such as word processing, presentation development, records management, schedule / time management, as well as other office procedures and terminology

Knowledge of social media strategy including working measurement and other updates

Advanced proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, etc.) as well as using Adobe Creative Suite

Demonstrated experience developing written and multimedia content for an organization’s social media channels including Facebook, Instagram and Twitter

Experience with metrics platforms (Meltwater Analytics, Google Analytics, Sprout and Cision)

Desktop publishing experience with tools like Photoshop and Canva

Excellent knowledge of social media best practices

Ability to cultivate, manage and leverage relationships, including senior leadership, and meet multiple stakeholder requirements

Excellent written / verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Outstanding organization skills and ability to multi-task successfully under pressure

Exceptional time-management and ability to meet deadlines

Ability to work independently, as well as part of a larger team


Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
