SUMMARY

The Illustrator II uses skills in drawing, color, composition, and storytelling to create engaging images that enliven product descriptions, technical data, and key brand messages for the Department of Energy, Oak Ridge Operations Office (DOE-ORO).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Brainstorms with the marketing and design team to come up with image ideas.

Prepares and designs rough draft illustrations according to client specifications.

Refines image design using illustration software i.e. computer-aided design (CAD) software.

Participates in design briefs with clients, editors and/or marketers to identify needs.

Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output. 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers. Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources. Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or six (6) months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Knowledge using computer-aided design (CAD) software

Drawing, painting and digital drawing skills

Knowledge of image editing and design software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop

Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines

Strong conceptual and artistic skills

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGRISTRATION

Must be a US citizen and possess or be able to obtain/maintain a security clearance

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Occasionally required to stand, walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.  Exposed to general office noise with computers printers and light traffic.
