The HVAC Engineering Technician applies knowledge of engineering principles in support of activities required to maintain the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Air Space (NAS) systems and equipment.  This position is responsible for operation procedures and maintenance concerning commercial Chiller / HVAC equipment and systems.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following.  Other duties may be assigned.

Interfaces with vendors, customers and field personnel related to the maintenance of Chiller / HVAC equipment and systems.  Utilizes advanced knowledge and understanding of HVAC system designs, applications, assembly methods and controls.

 

Troubleshoots failures in equipment and systems, and coordinates needed repairs. 

 

Assures compliance with appropriate FAA safety practices and procedures and with applicable federal, State and local codes, regulations and requirements.

 

Creates maintenance Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to insure that equipment life expectancy and warranties are met. 

 

Trains, mentors and provides daily oversight of assigned technical staff.  Assists in the planning and coordination of work assignments.  Advises and provides assistance on major repair problems and difficult diagnostic tasks or maintenance jobs.  Refers unusual technical or personnel issues to supervisor.

 

Leads by example in job performance, attendance, customer service, problem resolution, and cooperation.  Performs all tasks with a high level of professional and courteous customer service.

 

Proactively identifies process improvement opportunities.

 

Keeps supervisor informed as to status of projects, problems or other outstanding project related issues.

 

Plans daily activities within the guidelines of company policy, job description and supervisor’s instruction in such a way as to maximize personal output.  Responsible for aiding in own self-development by being available and receptive to all training made available by the company.

 

Responsible for keeping own immediate work area in a neat and orderly condition to ensure safety of self and coworkers.  Will report any unsafe conditions and/or practices to the appropriate supervisor and human resources.  Will immediately correct any unsafe conditions to the best of own ability.

 

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

Associate of Science degree in Engineering Technology or a related field of study, or completion of equivalent technical courses through military service or the FAA Academy.  Must have relevant experience based on the position level as outlined below.  Relevant experience should be in an HVAC-related discipline such as a Field Service Technician or Engineer performing work related to commercial chillers, boiler inspections and HVAC system repairs.  Experience on NAS systems and equipment is preferred

 

Engineering Technician 6 - Required degree and a minimum of 15 years relevant experience

Engineering Technician 5 - Required degree and a minimum of 12 years relevant experience

Engineering Technician 4 - Required degree and a minimum of 9 years relevant experience

Engineering Technician 3 - Required degree and a minimum of 6 years relevant experience

Engineering Technician 2 - Required degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience

Engineering Technician 1 - Required degree

 

CERTIFICATES / LICENSES / REGISTRATION

 

JOB SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES

Basic knowledge and understanding of various facets of engineering technology related to HVAC system design and applications

Knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, and heat exchanger design

Knowledge and understanding of maintenance and operation procedures related to system controls and data acquisition

Excellent computer skills with proficiency using Microsoft Windows and Office programs (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.)

Excellent written and verbal communications skills

Ability to employ a customer service approach, present technical information with clarity, and to build professional working relationships

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY
